Eating well can be key to helping you have a healthy pregnancy AND a healthy baby! There are some foods that you should definitely include in your pregnancy diet, though, and some you should totally avoid.
“During pregnancy, women should pay close attention to what they eat,” says Dr. Shannon Price, an ob-gyn with Affinity Physicians for Women. “It can be challenging to know what you should be focusing on and what you should stay away from, but we can help outline a healthy pregnancy diet for our patients.”
Here are 7 quick tips to eating healthy during your pregnancy:
- Don’t forget breakfast! Try fortified ready-to-eat or cooked breakfast cereals with added nutrients like calcium. If you are feeling sick, start with whole wheat toast and eat more later in the morning.
- Eat foods with fiber. Choose a variety of fruits and vegetables like carrots, cooked greens, bananas and melon. Eat plenty of beans and whole grains – with brown rice!
- Choose healthy snacks. Low-fat or fat-free yogurt with fruit and whole grain crackers are good choices.
- Take a prenatal vitamin with iron and folic acid every day.
- Eat up to 12 oz a week (2 average meals) of fish or shellfish, but stay away from fish with too much mercury – examples are shark, swordfish, king mackerel or tilefish. Fish low in mercury include shrimp, salmon and catfish.
- Stay away from soft cheeses and lunch meat. These include cheeses like feta, Brie and goat cheese. No sushi and no lunch meats or hot dogs unless they are heated to steaming.
- Limit caffeine and avoid alcohol. Drink decaffeinated coffee or tea and include seltzer water instead of soda; and, it’s best to steer clear of all alcohol while pregnant. Of course, staying well hydrated with good ‘ol H2O is always a good idea.
